Who Owns a Domain Name?

When you purchase a domain name, you are essentially purchasing the right to use the name for a period of time, typically 1 - 10 years.

A Registry Operator is an entity that owns and leases domain names within a specific TLD (Top Level Domain). For example, Verisign is the Registry Operator for .com and .net domain extensions.
